Why Your Liver Is Important Your liver has a lot of responsibility and is in charge of helping your body rid itself of harmful toxins! Taking care of it and making sure it is working will go a long way in improving your overall health!

The liver plays a central role in all metabolic processes in the body.  Its main job is to filter blood coming from the digestive tract before passing it to the rest of the body, but there are several important functions the liver performs:

–  Bile production and excretion (an important digestive liquid)

–  Excretion of bilirubin, cholesterol, hormones, and drugs

–  Metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates

–  Enzyme activation

–  Storage of glycogen (energy in the form of a sugar), vitamins, and minerals

–  Synthesis of plasma proteins, such as albumin, and clotting factors

–  Blood detoxification and purification

The liver is also the only organ in the body that can grow cells and regenerate itself.  It can be removed from the body, split in half, and transplanted into two different recipients.  Plus, a living person can donate a portion of their liver while having both portions regrow and function.  A healthy liver is important for many reasons and there are several things you can do (and not do) to protect it from damage so it can keep your body functioning properly:

 

  1. Eat a high fiber diet, including fresh fruit, vegetables, and whole grains
  2. Load up on healthy protein (vital for fighting infections and healing a damaged liver); include low fat or fat-free dairy, lean meats, and plant-based sources like beans, legumes, and lentils
  3. Avoid trans fats found in processed foods; opt for healthy fats found in nuts, seeds, flaxseeds, avocados, olive oil, and fatty fish
  4. Stay well hydrated
  5. Avoid consuming high amounts of salty and sugary foods
  6. Control your weight…avoid obesity
  7. Limit alcohol consumption
  8. Don’t abuse over-the-counter medications (especially acetaminophen)

 

There are a few common symptoms you might notice if your liver isn’t working well:

–  Chronic fatigue

–  Gastrointestinal issues (upset stomach, nausea, vomiting)

–  Decreased appetite

–  Dark colored urine

–  Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)

Inflammation is a process by which the body’s white blood cells, and the substances they produce, protect us from infection and foreign organisms.  However, in some diseases like arthritis, the body’s defense system (the immune system) triggers an inflammatory response when there are no foreign organisms to fight off.  These diseases, called autoimmune diseases, cause the body’s normally protective immune system to damage its own tissues. The body responds as if normal tissues are infected.  

Much of the chronic inflammation situations are in the joints, but chronic inflammation is a part of many diseases like asthma, Crohn’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, eczema, psoriasis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Parkinson’s disease.  In these diseases, the body is in a chronically inflamed state, essentially on “high alert” all the time. This prolonged state of emergency can cause lasting damage to the heart, brain, and other organs. For example, inflammatory cells present in the blood vessels for too long can promote the buildup of dangerous plaque.  Chronic inflammation can also damage your gut and joints, sabotage your sleep, harm your lungs, damage your gums and bones, make it harder to lose weight, and can contribute to depression.

There are some tell-tale signs of chronic inflammation that you should look out for:

  1. A “spare tire” around your waist
  2. High blood glucose levels
  3. Digestive problems like gas, diarrhea, bloating, or constipation
  4. You’re tired all the time
  5. Skin problems like eczema or psoriasis, or your skin is red and blotchy
  6. Allergies
  7. A puffy face, or puffy bags under the eyes

The role of supplements is to help us bridge the gaps in our nutrition. Proper nutrition is the key to overall health and wellness and supplements can help ensure that our bodies are nourished properly.

What exactly is a healthy diet?  The dictionary definition is simple…

A diet that contains the proper proportions of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water necessary to maintain good health”.  

Okay, that’s easy enough…but what exactly does that mean?  Is it really something you can put into action without details?

Probably not, and that’s why people tend to fall short of eating enough healthy foods to reap the benefits…and also where supplements come in.

It’s important to remember what the difference is between a vitamin, a mineral and a supplement.  This should help:

Vitamins & Minerals: Natural substances usually found in food that help the body remain healthy.

Supplements: Products taken orally that contain one or more ingredients, such as vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc. that are intended to “supplement” one’s diet; not considered food.  Meant to “fill in the gaps”, so to speak, of what you require for good health and what you’re actually eating to meet that requirement.

Many people take vitamins and minerals in either a type of multi-vitamin or in larger individual doses to cover a specific area they know they’re deficient in to make sure they are getting the proper amounts.  Whether doing it for the specific diet they eat that doesn’t provide all of the necessary nutrients, to help naturally treat specific conditions, or just to aid in the general functions of the body, taking vitamins and minerals definitely serves a purpose.  However, each one might only address one or two things.

Supplements, on the other hand, serve a different type of purpose.  Many of the ingredients in supplements are meant to promote a certain type of action or even reaction in the body based on the functions of the different ingredients as well as having them work together to achieve an intended result.
