Detox Drinks: Pros And Cons Of Detoxification And Cleansing

by Gabriella Patel on December 20, 2012

Detox drinks are at the center of some controversy. Some people believe the drinks are healthy and provide some strong benefits to your body. Others see them as a Band-Aid for weight loss that is more detrimental than positive in the long run. There are pros and cons to detox drinks. It is important to do plenty of your own research before deciding if detoxing is right for you.

A detox is basically a fast. The theory is that you can keep your body nourished by consuming detox drinks throughout the day while flushing out toxins. For one week people on this diet plan only drink the detox solution, this usually amounts to 6-12 glasses a day. You are not able to eat regular food at this time. Any exercise or rigorous physical activity must be stopped for the duration of the fast.

Originally this plan was strictly used as a way to flush out toxins from the body. However, people also started using detoxification as a way to lose weight. Marketers now advertise the benefits of weight loss when selling their systems. While detoxing can lead to rapid weight loss, this change is not permanent. Most people gain the weight right back as soon as the detox ends. In fact, detoxing for weight loss is not advisable. The fasting lowers your metabolism, which makes it harder for your body to burn calories. It is also commonly used to help restart your palate. Many people find it easier to start healthy diets after detoxing, since they no longer crave sugary or fatty foods. It is also believed to be good for your skin and to ultimately increase your energy levels.

It is important to know how to detox in a safe and healthy manner. Do not detox strictly for weight loss, and do not expect the weight you do lose to be permanent. Detoxing to rid your body of toxins can be beneficial. It is also a good way to start a new diet that incorporates healthy, fresh, and natural food into your life.

There are options for detoxification. You can purchase a ready-made system. These are available at health stores, discount stores, online, and through shopping channels. However, they can be expensive. There is also no guarantee that they are safe. Detox solutions are not regulated by the FDA, and some of them may use herbal ingredients that are not necessarily safe for everyone.

You may want to consider a natural detox. This entire means is that you learn how to detox your body yourself. This involves making your own detox drink. There are plenty of recipes online that use fairly simple ingredients. A popular recipe is a maple syrup cleanse. You will need water, maple syrup, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper. Mix two tablespoons of syrup, two tablespoons of lemon juice, and one tenth of a teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder. Pour warm water over this mixture until you fill up a glass. You can also multiply the ingredients in order to make a large pitcher to last all day. While this is a popular recipe, there are nutritional gaps such as protein. However, a natural detox can be beneficial if used for a short period of time.

Be prepared for some side effects during a detox. Digestive problems are common, such as diarrhea, gas, and bloating. Due to the restricted nature of the program, fatigue is also common. Many people also report headaches. If the detox is not balanced, you may also experience mood swings and bouts of depression.

Detox drinks do have some benefits. They can flush out toxins, help kick start a new diet plan, and ultimately result in better skin and higher energy levels. While you may lose weight, it is probably not permanent. Do plenty of research before starting any detox or cleanse.
