I am an active person – I like to run and try to run a few races each year. I also, like most other women, have a huge shoe obsession. It is like I can never have enough heels in my closet. I always seem to ‘need’ another pair. What do these two things have in common? Sadly although I am obsessed with shoes, I have never given much thought to the shoes I work out in. I always make sure I have a good pair of running shoes, because that is all I need really, right? WRONG!
I recently started the workout program Turbo Fire and have noticed that my knee hurts a bit, so started to do some research on athletic shoes and it turns out – I should be paying a lot more attention to more than just my running shoes. I guess it really does matter what types of shoes you work out in. Not only can it help me avoid injury, but I found out that I can get better results from work outs if I am wearing the right shoes! Who knew? So I decided to compile a general list of the types of shoes and when they should be worn. Hopefully this well help you find a great pair of shoes that will offer the comfort and support you need and get you great results and it won’t hurt if they look good too right?
Let’s start with Cross Trainers. These shoes are best for group classes like Zumba, Kick Boxing, Spinning and in my case Turbo Fire. When you see Cross Trainers – think group classes. Group classes require a shoe that has amulti-purpose outsole, a durable and breathable upper, and a low-profile midsole. Cross Trainers are light weight, yet stable and the soles provide great shock absorption no matter what activity you are doing. Cross Trainers usually come in fun, great colors so you can make a style statement even while working out! Asics, Nike and Reebok make great Cross Trainers.
Next let’s talk about Running. When looking for a long distance running shoes you need to look for neutral cushioning and motion control. The more tired you become on your run, the worse your form is going to become so you need a shoe that will compensate for your form. Asics, Saucony and Mizuno are the top running shoe brands. When you go to purchase a new pair of running shoes, make sure you run in them before you purchase. Doesn’t have to be a long run – do a quick jog around the store to make sure your feet feel good and that you are getting the support you need. Experts also recommend that you replace your running shoes every 300 to 500 miles.
Finally we can talk about Walking. Most people assume that you can use the same shoe for walking as you do for running, but that is not true. Your feet and body need different support when walking. A great walking shoe has extra support in the heel, which will hit the ground first and absorb the shock first. You want to look for extra support in the heel. New Balance makes great walking shoes.
Too often, we spend a lot of time and attention on our every day shoes – our heels, flats, the perfect boots for Fall and too often our athletic shoes get neglected. Which is actually quite ironic as these shoes are the shoes we are doing a lot more activity in and the right pair of shoe can make a huge impact on our body and the overall performance. Before doing my research I didn’t really think there was that much of a difference between athletic shoes, especially when it came to doing group classes. I assumed that my running shoes would work perfectly for everything else. But that is not the case – your body needs different types of support for different activities and it is important that you get the right shoe. This will help you avoid injury and may help you get better results because your body is functioning properly.
