Have a Holly, Jolly, and HEALTHY Holiday Season!

by Rachelle on December 20, 2012

Everyone knows that the holidays can be dangerous to your waistline.  Family parties, getting together with friends, and delicious Christmas goodies can sabotage your fitness goals!  According to the National Institutes of Health, Americans gain about one pound over the winter holiday, which doesn’t sound that bad, right?  The bad news is that we don’t lose the weight so this yearly weight gain tends to accumulate year after year.  This year make plans to stay fit and avoid the annual holiday weight gain!

Schedule time for fitness!

You may be extra busy this time of year but anyone can make time to fit in just 10 minutes a day to workout.  Although this amount of exercise may not seem like much it is better than no exercise at all!   And once you have started exercising you may be motivated to keep going!

Stick to a consistent sleep schedule

There is a direct connection between healthy weight loss and regular sleeping habits.  A healthy sleep schedule helps to control your appetite and keep your energy up throughout the day.  Learn more about the weightloss benefits of a healthy sleep cycle at http://creativebioscience.com/blog/consistantly-healthy-sleeping-habits/#more-35 .

High-Intensity Interval Training

SprintHigh-intensity interval training is great when you don’t have a lot of time to workout.  You will burn maximum calories in a minimal amount of time.  Set a treadmill, exercise bike, or step machine on the interval program option or you can sprint, jog, do jumping jacks, jump rope, or other exercises where you can incorporate quick bursts of activity with periods of slower exercise.  For more tips and ideas about high-intensity inverval training read more at http://creativebioscience.com/blog/the-20-minute-workout/ .

Incorporate exercise into your holiday activities

When holiday shopping park further away from the entrance and walk rapidly through the stores.  Take the stairs instead of the elevator.  Instead of going to a movie or eating out when you get together with friends go sledding, iceskating, or walk take a walk through the Christmas lights.

Avoid overeating at holiday parties

It may be hard to avoid your favorite holiday desserts so don’t deprive yourself just practice healthy portion control.  Avoid overeating at holiday parties by having a healthy snack beforehand and eat normally that day so you are not starting when you arrive at the party.  Avoid high-caloric alcoholic beverages so you are not drinking too many calories.

Work out at home

Your busy holiday schedule may not allow you to head to the gym so try working out at home.  You will save time on your commute and you can get a full-body workout with little or no equipment with this at home circuit workout.
