Pass on the Soda, Water Has Too Many Benefits

by Gabriella Patel on October 23, 2014

We always seem to be impressed by water and what it has to offer. However, we don’t take the time to ensure we drink enough water. With all the water that surrounds us, why are we constantly downing energy drinks, coffee, and juices when we are thirsty?

It might help to know some of the many benefits that water provides to our bodies.

  1. A great source of energy

What is not known by many people is that water is a natural energy booster. Your body is 70% water, so it only makes sense that you would need regular doses of water in order to keep your brain, lungs and heart running as efficiently as possible.

  1. Can help with weight loss

If you take regular drinks of water, your stomach will feel full.  If your stomach is full, you won’t be as inclined to snack or eat as much during meals.  As a result, you have a natural weight loss strategy.  In addition, water helps boost your metabolism and it has zero calories – what could be better as a weight loss strategy?

  1. Helps relieve headaches

Water is a very common headache remedy.  What may not be known by many is that the brain is actually about 90% water, so when you get a headache, you are actually experiencing dehydration.

  1.  Brightens your complexion

Water helps keep the skin moisturized and balanced, and so when you’ve had enough water to drink, your skin looks healthy and radiant.  If you’re dehydrated, your skin won’t be as elastic and you may get wrinkles as a result.

  1. Water helps your kidneys and bowels work properly

What goes in must come out in some form, and when you drink enough water, the kidneys are able to filter out the bad stuff from your system more effectively.  Your urine won’t stink and it will be the clear color that many physicians say you should have.  In addition, drinking enough water helps relieve symptoms of constipation, which can cause a great deal of abdominal discomfort.

  1. You avoid extra sugar consumption from alternatives

While many of us may prefer to drink juices, coffee or soda to quench a thirst, water is the best thirst quencher going, because it’s not packed with a bunch of extra sugar that your body doesn’t need. It helps keep muscles moving properly and various organs functioning at their best.  While some fruit and vegetable juices are great at quenching thirst, or at providing our bodies with extra nutrients, they may have extra sugar which we don’t need.

  1. Improves your mood

When you drink plenty of water, your body will function efficiently.  When your body functions efficiently, you feel good.  When you feel good, your mood is going to be elevated, and you’ll be less likely to feel down.

  1. Last but not least, it’s free!

Possibly the best reason of all to drink a lot of water is because it’s a free thirst quencher, as it should be! You can always borrow a cup out of your break room or buy a reusable water bottle and continue to pack a water bottle with you daily in order to ensure you stay hydrated.

It is important to get your water tested to make sure that it is okay to drink. If you believe that water problems are present, you can always call a local bulk water company to bring you clean water tanks.

So we know some of the many benefits of water, how much are we supposed to drink per day? According to the Institute of Medicine, it has been recommended that an adequate intake for men is around 13 cups water per day. For women, an adequate intake of 9 cups per day has been suggested.

So next time you are faced with a decision in the break room to spend a few coins on a soda, think about all these benefits that grabbing a cup of water will accomplish and it might help you make that decision to go the healthy route!
