Why You Should Stop Drinking Soda

by Rachelle on October 19, 2017

An important step towards weight loss is to stop drinking soda. A can of soda may contain as many as 240 calories, and these are empty calories without any nutrients or health benefits. Sodas contain two sweeteners, sugar and fructose (such as corn syrup). A typical can of soda might contain up to 17 teaspoons of sugar.

The high sugar content is bad news for your health, including the health of your teeth and gums. Sodas are also linked to increasing obesity in adults and in children. Diet sodas are not always much healthier either, as they contain artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame, that are also linked to many health risks.

There are many alternative soft drinks that are a lot healthier and lower in calories. Try making your own flavored water by adding some lemon juice, fresh herbs such as mint, or a few slices of fruit (such as freshly cut orange slices) to a glass of mineral water or low-calorie tonic water. Iced green tea or herbal teas and diluted fruit juices are also great low-calorie alternatives to sodas.
