Are Organic Foods Better For You?

Are organic foods healthier and more nutritious than non-organic foods? Even though they are usually more expensive than non-organic alternatives, choosing organic products has many benefits. Organic fruits and vegetables contain fewer chemicals, such as pesticides, herbicides and fungicides that are commonly used in non-organic agriculture. Organic dairy products do not contain traces of antibiotics and other drugs that are widely used to treat cattle on non-organic farms and that can leave residues in your milk, yogurt and cheese. Organic eggs are free of traces of antibiotics that are sometimes found on factory-farmed eggs. Organic farms also have to follow stricter regulations about animal welfare than non-organic farms.

Is organic food better or more nutritious? Research has not proven that all organic foods are necessarily more nutritious than non-organic food. However a diet that includes a lot of organic, local produce is generally a healthy diet, because you will be eating fewer chemicals, pesticide traces and synthetic preservatives or colors. If you buy locally produced organic products from your local store or farmers’ markets, you will also support small local farms.
