Don’t Let Hunger Sabotage Your Diet

I have found that the biggest saboteur to my diet is hunger. If I let myself get hungry – it seems the only way to satisfy that hunger is to reach for something sweet and sugary, items which are definitely not apart of my healthy eating diet. To help keep myself full and avoid those weak hungry moments I have done some research to find the best appetite suppressants.  There are quite a few ways to deal with hunger and I will go over the options I found.

The first is natural appetite suppressants – foods that I can incorporate into my diet that will help me feel full longer.  Foods that are high in insoluble fiber will help keep you full longer, as it takes longer for your body to digest. Oatmeal, apples, strawberries and blueberries and raw veggies all have high amounts of insoluble fiber. Fruits also contain natural sugars that can help stabilize your insulin levels, avoiding a rise and fall in your blood sugar levels which can lead to overeating.

Nuts are another great option to add into your appetite control diet because of the Phenylalnine they contain. Phenylalnine is an essential amino acid that signals the release of CCK which is responsible for slowing down digesting and telling your brain your stomach is full. You just have to remember to be patient when eating nuts because it can take up to 20 minutes for your appetite to decrease. Soy milk is another food that can help stop hungry effectively because of its high protein and fiber content.

Another option to help you in your battle against hunger are appetite control supplements. There are a lot of supplement options out there and each one claims to effectively stop hunger.

The first supplement I came across is Hoodia. Hoodia is a cactus that was originally used by the Kalahari bushmen to control their hunger during long hunting trips. Hoodia is widely advertised as a weight loss supplement because of its appetite suppressing nature. The active ingredient in Hoodia is called P57 and is said to interact with the brain in a way similar to glucose – tricking the brain to think it is full when it is actually not. There are a lot of Hoodia supplements out there, so it is important to make sure you are purchasing from a reputable seller.

Next is Glucomannan, which is a soluble fiber from the root of the konjac plant. This supplement is recommended by Dr. Oz because it acts like a sponge and soaks up your hunger. Glucomannan sponges up water in the digestive tract, thereby reducing the absorption of carbs and cholesterol, leading to weight loss. It is also said to help reduce constipation and diabetes. You can purchase it in power form to add to your favorite drinks, sauces and foods or it comes in a capsule, taken three times a day.

Griffonia Simplicifolia is another supplement I came across in my research. It is derived from a West African shrub. The seeds increase serotonin levels, which help suppress hunger and control weight gain. It is recommended that you take 200 mg, three times day.

Hunger is a hard thing to combat, especially when following a healthy diet. One of the most successful ways of fighting it, is to have healthy, wholesome snacks readily available, so that whenever hunger strikes you are prepared and not tempted to snack on something sweet and sugary. You can add things into your diet that will help you effectively stave off hunger – such as foods that are high in insoluble fiber. Insoluble fiber, to me, seems to be one of the best appetite control supplements.

There are times though where diet changes are not enough and you may need to turn to other supplements to help. Look for supplements that include at least one of the ingredients above. Make you sure you are also purchasing the supplements from a legitimate source to make sure you are getting the strongest and purest form of the supplement. Also make sure you are including your doctor when making these decisions as thy can help guide you to the right supplement that will work for you and your body.
