“Juicing” is a popular way to blend all of your favorite fruits and vegetables into one convenient drink, and has a variety of reasons as to why we should be drinking them more often. It is touted as one of the healthiest ways to detox from unhealthy eating, and can help jumpstart your system to feeling great again.
With that kind of reputation, this diet seems like an amazing option right? Unfortunately, it is not entirely low maintenance (to begin with, you need to purchase a juicer and know your way around the produce department of your local grocery store). But here are a few reasons why it is worth it:
Why Should I Start Juicing?
Fresh juice is like getting a vitamin-mineral cocktail in a glass! It’s loaded with vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phytonutrients. All these nutrients are found in full complement, packaged by nature to work together perfectly. Juice is broken down so well that the body can absorb it easily. The juices are easily absorbed and the body can utilize the many nutrients they offer without having to work so hard to breakdown the food.
Starting a juice diet will help you lose weight as a side effect of detoxifying your body and making you healthier. For those who want to lose weight, vegetable juice alkalizes the body. Most of the American diet breaks down to an acidic end product. Acids are harmful to delicate tissues and organs so the body prefers to store them as much as possible in fat cells. It will hang onto those cells and even make more for storage until you get enough alkaline food in your diet. Same thing goes for toxins. They get stored in fat cells as well. But along comes the antioxidant-rich juices that bind to toxins and render them harmless. Then the body can let go of the fat cells that stored them.
How to Start
It takes 3 months for cells in the body to turn over. That is about the amount of time it takes for people to really start noticing a big difference. Begin a juice diet on the weekend, during which you substitute juices for all meals. Then add solid whole foods to a juice regimen of 1-3 glasses of veggie juice a day, like salads, soups, lettuce wraps, organic, and free-range poultry.
Here are a few healthy juicing ideas to get you started on the right foot:
Green Lemonade
2 apples, green are lower in sugar
1/2 lemon, peeled if not organic
1 handful of your favorite greens
Juice all ingredients, stir and serve as soon as possible.
The Spicy Tomato
2 medium tomatoes
2 dark green lettuce leaves
2 radishes
Small handful parsley
1 lime or lemon, peeled if not organic
Dash of hot sauce
Cut produce to fit your juicer’s feed tube. Juice ingredients and stir. Pour into a glass and drink as soon as possible.
The Ginger Hopper with a Twist
5 medium carrots, scrubbed well, green tops removed, ends trimmed
1 green apple
1-inch piece fresh ginger root, peeled
1/2 lemon, peeled if not organic
Cut produce to fit your juicer’s feed tube. Juice ingredients and stir. Pour into a glass and drink as soon as possible.
