Healthy Butter Substitute Options

Butter contains saturated fat and a lot of calories. It can be an occasional treat, but if you are trying to lose weight or if you suffer from high cholesterol, try some of the many healthy substitutes:

Butter SubstituteAvocado, olive oil or Greek yogurt are the best healthy substitutes for butter. If you are buying a butter substitute spread from the store, make sure it does not contain unhealthy trans fats.
Avocado contains more fat that other fruits, but the fat is monounsaturated and healthier than the saturated fat in butter. Avocado also contains fiber, vitamins and minerals. Mashed avocado is a simple and nutritious substitute for butter on toast or in a sandwich.
Greek yogurt is a great butter substitute for healthy baking. It gives texture and moisture to bread and cakes, but has fewer calories and less fat than butter. Use half a cup of yogurt for each whole cup of butter called for in the recipe.
Olive oil is a healthy substitute for butter in cooking and baking. Use it instead of butter in pasta sauces and many other dishes. When baking, try 3/4 cup of olive oil instead of a cup of butter.
