How Do Vegans Get Enough Protein?

There are several benefits to adding vegetarian and vegan foods into your diet. Plant based foods are rich in nutrients, antioxidants and fiber, but low in saturated fat. Vegetarians and vegans usually have low cholesterol levels and a reduced risk of heart disease. Cutting down on meat and eating more plant-based foods usually leads to weight loss, too.

A vegetarian diet provides a lot of fiber, vitamins and minerals, but vegetarians and vegans are often asked how they get enough protein.

Getting protein from vegetarian sources is easier than it sounds. Green vegetables, such as kale and spinach, contain protein and many important vitamins and minerals. Hemp powder is another excellent protein source for both vegetarians and vegans. Beans and lentils are protein-rich foods that are also high in healthy fiber. Almond milk and other plant milks contain protein as well as calcium and many vitamins. Soy products, such as tofu, soy milk and soy yogurt, are low-fat protein sources. You can also find an increasing range of vegetarian foods in supermarkets today and a wide variety of vegan recipes in books and online.
