The benefits of yoga include increased flexibility, better mobility, relief from back pain, increased strength and stamina, better balancing and concentration skills, better sleep and a calmer mind. Yoga also improves posture, relieves shoulder and neck pains and boosts circulation and lymph flow. Yoga tones the body and strengthens the abdominal muscles, and it can even help with weight loss, especially if you choose one of the more dynamic styles such as vinyasa or hot yoga. The deep breathing used in yoga classes helps the body to relax, improves sleep and calms the mind.
Many athletes use yoga to improve their flexibility or for a pre workout warm-up to get the muscles, joints and ligaments ready for exercise. Many yoga postures are also useful for stretching after an exercise session. Stretching after workouts helps to prevent muscle aches and pains, improves mobility in the joints, and calms down the body and the mind after an intense training session. There are many yoga postures that are suitable for post-workout stretching, and even 5-10 minutes of stretching every day can be beneficial.
