If you’re trying to shed some extra pounds, don’t let the holidays take you off track. You can prepare many delicious, healthy meals that will not only help you to keep losing weight, but could also become new family favorites.

If your holiday meals are typically loaded with fat, you can often make simple substitutions to trim the fat content down. For example, instead of serving shrimp scampi for your Christmas Eve dinner, make a healthy salad and serve it with a shrimp cocktail.

High calorie desserts, such as cookies, pies and cakes can be made healthier with the addition of less fattening ingredients. One excellent substitution for cakes and muffins is to use applesauce in place of the oil. You’ll get delicious results with this healthy alternative and consume fewer calories.

When preparing healthy meals, keep in mind that you don’t have to give up flavor just because you’re cutting back on calories. For example, instead of a heavy cream or hollandaise sauce over your vegetables, opt for freshly steamed veggies. You might be surprised at how great fresh, organic vegetables can taste, even without added butter and calories.
