The Benefits Of Taking Probiotic Supplements

by Rachelle on May 3, 2017

A healthy digestive system is important for general health and well-being. Probiotics are “friendly bacteria” that have many benefits for the digestive system. Probiotic supplements help balance the bacteria in the intestines by increasing healthy bacteria and reducing harmful bacteria in the digestive tract.

Probiotic supplements are used to promote healthy digestion, and research suggests that they could help with conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). They are also believed to boost the immune system. Different types of probiotics include Lactobacillus acidophilus and Lactobacillus GG, and bifidobacteria (such Bifidobacterium bifidus). Different types are recommended for different health issues.

There is no set dosage recommendation that would apply to all the different types of probiotics. Talk to a health care provider if you are not sure which types to take, and follow the guidelines on the product label. Some supplements have a dosage based on how many live organisms they contain, but others are based on CFU or colony forming units.

You can also get some healthy bacteria naturally from certain foods. For example, consider consuming natural live yogurt, sauerkraut, miso, kefir and some soy drinks.
