Antioxidants prevent damage caused by free radicals in the body’s cells, and they are also thought to slow down the aging process. The best source of antioxidants is a diet that is high in fruits and vegetables. Most vegetables and fruits contain these important nutrients, and some good sources include berries such as blueberries, cranberries and blackberries; green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli, carrots, cabbage, and beans and legumes such as black beans or red kidney beans. Green tea, black tea, red wine and dark chocolate are also rich in antioxidants.
The best way to get enough antioxidants and other nutrients is to eat a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in different colors: purple (eggplant, grapes, plums, beetroot), orange and yellow (carrots, peppers, oranges), green (kale, spinach, broccoli) and red (strawberries, raspberries, cherries).
Is it necessary to take antioxidant supplements? If your daily diet is rich in vegetables and fruit, supplements are not always necessary. Some antioxidant supplements can interfere with certain medicines, so if you are planning to take a high-dose supplement, consult your doctor if you are taking prescription medication.
