Wardrobe Staples That Instantly Slim

by CB Blog Team on September 12, 2012

I have noticed a common theme among the women I help style. Every one of them seem to be temporarily dressing for their current body, always waiting for those extra pounds to come off before they really build their wardrobe. They are hesitant to make an investment in their clothing now, planning instead to eventually spend money and time on their “real’ wardrobe once those extra pounds come off.

Losing weight is a battle, one that I am currently fighting after the birth of my first child; so I recently found myself doing the thing I teach my clients not to do – dividing my closet into my current clothes and skinny clothes and then re-wearing the same t-shirts everyday, telling myself I will start dressing stylish again, once my body is back.

Every woman out there hates something about her body, yes even the tall, skinny girls. Aggravating right? Because of this – most people dress to hide their body or at least the parts they hate, rather than focusing on the things they love. My goal is to help you feel confident and dress the body you have now, emphasizing the assets you like, and disguising what you think are your problem areas.  Just because you may be working off a few extra pounds, or hope to do so soon, doesn’t mean you have to put off looking great. There are a few tricks you can implement now, while you are working towards your ideal body that will help you look slimmer and build your confidence.

I share these tips with everyone I work with, because they work for everyone – regardless of your size, weight and body shape. They are easy to implement into your wardrobe and will make a difference in how you look and feel.

Let’s start with tops. Everyone needs to own at least one V-Neck top. The V-Neck is one of the most flattering things you can put on your body because it highlights one of the greatest areas of the female body – the Décolletage, which is the area between your chest and neck. The V shape draws the eyes upward, highlighting that area. The V shape also creates the illusion of a slimmer waist, hips and thighs because of the triangle shape it creates. Don’t let the V-Neck scare you – it doesn’t have to be plunging or revealing (unless your chest is something you want to highlight). There are a lot of options out there – sweaters, t-shirts, embellished tops and the classic oxford when left unbuttoned at the top can create an amazing V-neck shape.

1. JCrew Oxford Boy Shirt

2. Gap Boyfriend Pullover Sweater

3. Old Navy Pinktucked Tie-Yoke Tops

4. Target Gathered Crossover

Next we are going to talk about Jeans. Besides swimming suits – jeans are one of the most uncomfortable items to shop for. There are so many options out there, so many different fits, styles, and brands it can become overwhelming.  Too often we get so stuck on the size that we only try on what we think we should fit into, rather than what actually fits and feels good. To help steer you in the right direction, I recommend that everyone own a pair of Boot Cut Jeans. Boot Cut does wonders for your lower half. They fit tighter in the thighs and then cut out as they go down towards your ankles.

This cut balances out your hips and thighs and creates one long line down your legs – making you look slimmer and taller. When choosing a wash – go for a darker wash. Darker washes help hide any imperfections you might have in your hips and thighs. Pair your Boot Cut Jeans with at least a 1 ½ inch heel and you will create the illusion of legs that go on for miles. To help ease some of the pain jean shopping can bring – block out an afternoon to focus just on jeans. Go to multiple stores and try on multiple brands to find a pair that fits great and makes you feel great. Once you have found the brand that works, don’t look back!

The final item that I recommend every one own? A Wrap Dress.   Diane Von Furstenburg introduced the snug-fitting Jersey Wrap Dress to the fashion world in the 1970’s and it has never left. The Wrap Dress uses the power of the V-Neck combined with the wrap front to create a long and slim torso and waist.  It hugs all the right places and then drapes beautifully over the rest of the body. The tie around the waist allows you to create the perfect fit for your body. Look for wrap dress made of out of Jersey to get the best fit and don’t be afraid of prints. It goes well with flats and heels and is a stunner with long boots in the fall and winter. Faux Wrap Dresses can also do the trick, just make the sure the ‘tie’ is on the side to create the same lines as a real wrap dress.

1. Macy’s Three Quarter Geometric Print Wrap Dress

2. Old Navy Long Sleeved Wrap Dress

3. Boden  Richmond Wrap Dress

4. ModCloth Aqua Moment Dress

My final piece of advice is to be confident and comfortable in the clothes you choose. I can tell you what looks best or what dresses your body well, but unless you feel confident and comfortable in that item, it won’t look good. Whether you are working on losing some weight, or have just achieved your weight loss goal, these three wardrobe items will make a difference in how you dress and flatter your body.
