What Is the Flat Belly Diet?

by Wendy on September 26, 2012

How nice would it be to lose excess weight from your midsection without doing endless amounts of crunches? The Flat Belly Diet was created to do just that, promising a flatter belly and up to 15 pounds in weight loss in 32 days by just changing your dietary habits.

The former editor of Prevention magazine in partnership with a registered dietician, created The Flat Belly Diet.  It follows the theory that Monounsaturated fatty acids focus on and destroy belly fat while also keeping you full longer, which in turn will help prevent you from overeating. Monounsaturated fatty acids (or MUFA’s) are plant-based fats and can be found in foods like avocados, seeds, nuts, olive oil and shockingly enough – chocolate. MUFA’s help keep the blood vessels soft and pliable after eating, whereas saturated fats can harden and clog arteries.

The Flat Belly Diet also goes beyond just focusing on MUFA’s. It is loosely modeled after a Mediterranean-style diet, focusing on healthy eating centered around fruits, veggies, whole grains, olive oil and fish. The focus is on wholesome, unrefined foods and very little red meat.

The diet plan begins with a four-day “anti-bloat” jumpstart, which is designed to help reduce excess water and bloating and help you start getting into the mind-set and habit of healthy eating. Part of this jump-start period includes drinking the flat belly diet sassy water. The flat belly diet water is a combination of herbs, citrus and cucumber and is a substitute for sodas, coffee and high-sugar drinks. It provides a flavored alternative to water without the added sugars and caffeine. Some dieters choose to continue to drink the sassy water throughout the entire diet plan.

After the four-day jumpstart, you follow a 28-day meal plan, eating between 1,200 to 1,600 calories each day, depending on your age, gender and activity level. Each meal includes at least one serving of a MUFA. You choose from a list of 28 interchangeable mix-and-match breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks. The diet plan includes 80 different recipes along with their full nutritional information. The meal plan also requires that you eat something from the list every four hours. The diet plan provides weekly shopping lists, which helps make the plan easier to follow.

Exercise during the flat belly diet plan is not required to see results, but is strongly encouraged. Included in the plan is an optional workout plan with full workout descriptions, intensity levels and duration.

So the real question is – whether or not this works and if so – how? As explained above, monounsaturated fatty acids can help prevent the accumulation of abdominal fat. This diet, when combined with moderate exercise, will help your body lose weight.  By focusing on consuming healthy fats and large amounts of fiber, your body will stay fuller longer, making it easier to stick to this diet. You can and most likely will lose weight on The Flat Belly Diet plan, but it is yet to be determined whether or not MUFA’s have belly-flattening compounds that will quickly eliminate your body fat, especially without exercise.

The Flat Belly Diet membership is $19.95 per month or $49.50 for three months. This membership includes access to weekly meal plans, with all nutritional information and shopping lists. It will tell you exactly what to eat and when to eat it, which helps reduce the amount of planning you will have to do. It also includes an optional exercise plan to follow.  There are also supplemental materials available including a pocket guide, a family cookbook and an essential guidebook.

Besides helping you lose weight and eliminating excess belly fat, The Flat Belly Diet can help stabilize blood sugar levels and reduce the odds of diabetes or help control the affects of diabetes. It will also help decrease your rick for heart disease and reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. The Flat Belly Diet is also very easy to customize to meet your specific needs, including gluten-free eating and vegetarianism.

As with any diet, do your research beforehand to make sure that this is something that would work for you. It may even be beneficial to talk with your doctor to make sure that this diet plan will work for you.
