When Can I Start A Post Pregnancy Workout Program?

When is it safe to start exercising after giving birth? Give yourself approximately six weeks to recover from delivery before you start an exercise program. It is a good idea to wait for your first postnatal check-up (which is usually 6-8 weeks after delivery) before beginning a post pregnancy workout program. If you had a C-section it is recommended that you check with your health care provide before starting exercising. Gentle walking is usually fine even before the six week time frame is finished.

When you start exercising again, begin with slow easy walks, gentle stretching or other types of light activity. When your strength and fitness levels build up, you can slowly increase the length of your walks and add other exercises as long as you do not overdo it. If you did not exercise at all during pregnancy and if you had complications, check with your doctor before starting physical activity. Postnatal yoga or other postnatal exercises classes are ideal safe workouts. Ask your local health center, gym or yoga studio if they offer post pregnancy workout classes.
